Methadrine Won't Kill You, All at Once

from a bathroom wall in San Francisco mid-60s, North Beach

Second Prize, Poetry
Methadrine won’t kill you, all at once
It had to be true, it was right there
On the wall. Big red letters scrawled loudly
Right under "for a good time, call Judy, 265-5569"
This was true, I knew Judy, we all did
So I’m standing there reading the wall
And Bird is blowing some long gone wail on the box
But it’s late and I’m keeping an eye on the door
And Tony is fixing to fix, works on the floor
He sighs as the rush comes to him and I read again
Methadrine won’t kill you, all at once
And I’m standing there thinking about calling Judy
