Ice Cube Me

by Lyle Nelson
Poetry

Hot onion rings burn my tongue,
like your words always burn my soul.
I am ice and you
melt me, you bitch. I want cold.
I like it that way. I don’t want you
near me. Nothingness
feels good.

I never asked for your warm touch,
but you give it freely.
I am not worthy of it or any.
You are like onion, layer
upon layer of compassion.
Who needs it! Leave me alone in my
own cold, empty room.
no more fire, heat,
to warm my soul.
