A workshop course intended for students who are interested in writing creative non-fiction; includes appropriate exercises, readings and analyses of published and student work. A course intended for students who are interested in writing for the screen; includes appropriate exercises, readings, viewing, and critical analyses of professional and student work. This course is a survey of literature by women: fiction, drama, poetry, biography, and essay and covers multicultural and international literature from classical to contemporary periods, as well as feminist and gender theory. English 41 explores themes, authors, or genres through close readings, contextual approaches, interpretations, and critical evaluations. The subject will vary with the instructor (for example, the instructor may choose a thematic organization such as “Rites of Passage in the American Consciousness” or the “The Detective as Hero”; focus on a particular author such as Emily Dickinson or Carlos Fuentes; or a genre such as popular literature or science fiction).
