Safe, ethical nursing care includes but is not limited to knowledge of commonly used medications, using the nursing process to guide critical thinking, and understanding the role, responsibility and limitations (scope of practice) of the vocational nurse in California. Upon successful completion of the vocational nursing program and passing the licensure exam the vocational nurse is licensed to practice nursing as an LVN. Skills learned in the program allow the LVN to practice in numerous settings such as; hospitals, clinics, long term care facilities, rehabilitation facilities, physicians’ offices, correction facilities, and private duty nursing. A student wishing to become a registered nurse should discuss this with the counselor/advisor to address the additional courses required by the registered nursing program.
