Ambitious Donuts

by Sandi Howard
Poetry

Dirty, little country girl
waiting for someone
who will throw the pearls
out to the pigs,
and to the kids they own
(the ones left over
once the water’s thrown),
trying to cover
all her black and white dreams,
painting them in neon red
with 20 buck schemes.
A Technicolor voodoo bread.
She flips the switch as the moon’s just right.
Donuts aren’t the only thing hot and ready tonight.
